National Sandwich Day- It's a Celebration!
By Joan Berkman
It may be Election Day on November 3, but it also is National Sandwich Day and Ruth's Chris plans to celebrate!
This national recognition of one of the world’s most versatile and portable meals can be enjoyed from roadside diners to gourmet cafés. More than just bread and filling, sandwiches tell stories of ingenuity, culinary creativity and everyday practicality. This day gives people a reason to appreciate a meal that can be as simple or as elaborate as a multi-layered specialty.
According to popular legend - this day traces back to John Montagu, the 18th century 4th Earl of Sandwich, of England. Montague was an avid gambler who didn't want to leave the card table so he asked for meat to be served between two slices of bread so he could eat with one hand while continuing to play. Other card players began ordering "the same as Sandwich" and the name stuck. November 3rd was chosen for National Sandwich Day specifically because it falls on the Earl of Sandwich's birthday. Since then, sandwiches have become a global food culture connector.
National Sandwich Day celebrates this diversity, encouraging people to explore new combinations and specialties which Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Chesterfield and Downtown St. Louis take to the next level - literally with its 8-inch tall RBar Burger. The 8-ounce, 80/20 blend of USDA Prime tenderloin, strip and ribeye trim, seasoned with kosher salt and coarse black pepper and placed in an 1,800 Montague broiler to sear in the juices. The patty sits on locally made brioche with a bottom dress of Roma tomatoes and shredded iceberg. Havarti cheese and smoked onion aioli are situated on top. Fried red onions serve as the crowning garnish. It's called the RBar Burger to embrace Ruth's Chris' restaurant bar as a regular gathering place, as in "our bar."
