Sophisticated Giving Spotlight: The Saint Louis Art Museum

This week’s Sophisticated Giving Spotlight is on The Saint Louis Art Museum!

Sophisticated Details: The Saint Louis Art Museum collects, presents, interprets, and conserves works of art of the highest quality across time and cultures; educates, inspires discovery, and elevates the human spirit; preserves a legacy of artistic achievement for the people of St. Louis and the world; and engages, includes, and represents the full diversity of the St. Louis community supporting it. Founded in 1879, the Museum is one of our region’s most prized cultural institutions. The museum is free to the public and welcomes more than half a million visitors each year. Located in Forest Park, the museum holds an encyclopedia collection of more than 34,000 works of art and is one of the leading comprehensive art museums in the country. In July 2021, the Museum welcomed Min Jung Kim as its new Barbara B. Taylor Director.

Sophisticated Goals: In the year ahead, the Museum will present special exhibitions that highlight the collection, showcase diverse works, and expand artistic narratives. Scheduled presentations include Paintings on Stone: Science and the Sacred, 1530- 1800, an exploration of the stone surfaces used to create stunning portraits, mythological scenes, and sacred images, and Catching the Moment: Contemporary Art from the Ted L. and Maryanne Ellison Simmons Collection, a dazzling array of contemporary American art acquired from Hall of Fame catcher Ted Simmons and master printer Maryanne Ellison Simmons. Other exhibitions will feature contemporary works by Oscar Murillo and Nuotama Frances Bodomo, Chinese silk textiles, European drawings and prints from the turn of the 20th century, and modern German works on paper. Check slam.org for more details about exhibitions, programs, and festivals in 2022.

Volunteer Opportunities: The museum is supported by more than 180 volunteers who advance the arts while learning new skills and meeting people with similar interests.
