HOME IS THE GOAL! GATEWAY180 IS CHANGING LIVES, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME

Gateway 180, the largest residential emergency and transitional shelter for women, children, and families experiencing homeless in the State of Missouri is having their annual fundraising gala on November 6th.

A home is more than four walls and a roof. It is security, dignity, stability, and the foundation upon which dreams are built.

For many of us, returning home at the end of a long day is something we take for granted. We unlock the door, settle into familiar surroundings, and enjoy the comforts of a place we call our own. But imagine being a parent with young children and having no safe place to spend the night. Imagine the uncertainty, the fear, and the overwhelming responsibility of trying to protect your family when you don't know where you'll sleep tomorrow.

Unfortunately, that is the reality for far too many families right here in St. Louis.

Those who know me understand that I have always believed that those of us who have been blessed with life's comforts have a responsibility to help those who are struggling. And I feel especially strongly about helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Sometimes, all someone needs is a helping hand, a little encouragement, and an opportunity to climb that next rung on the ladder toward independence.

That is precisely why I am such an enthusiastic supporter of Gateway180.

I have personally toured the Gateway180 facility, and I came away deeply impressed by the organization's mission and its commitment to helping women, children, and families rebuild their lives.

Gateway180 isn't simply providing a bed for the night. It is providing hope, stability, guidance, and a pathway back into the St. Louis community.

And that is a mission worth supporting!

More Than a Shelter — A Pathway to Independence

Gateway180 is Missouri's LARGEST emergency shelter serving women, children, and families experiencing homelessness. Each night, the organization provides shelter to approximately 125 individuals, more than half of whom are children.

Let that sink in for a moment.

More than half are children!

These are youngsters who deserve the same opportunities, security, and sense of belonging that we want for our own children and grandchildren.

During the first eight months of 2026 alone, Gateway180 provided more than 40,000 bed nights to individuals and families in need, which is on track to provide a total of 50,000

Those numbers are impressive, but behind every statistic is a human story. A mother determined to create a better future for her children. A family struggling to regain its footing. A child who simply wants a safe place to sleep, study, and dream.

Gateway180 provides emergency shelter, but its mission goes considerably further. Through supportive services, resources, and individualized assistance, the organization helps families overcome the obstacles that contributed to their housing instability and work toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

As Kathy Connors, Executive Director of Gateway180, explains:

"Home is the goal for every family we serve. Families come to Gateway180 because they have nowhere else to go. We provide a safe place to stay, but we also work alongside each family to address the barriers that led to homelessness and help them move toward a permanent home."

Kathy Connors, Executive Director of Gateway180

That philosophy resonates deeply with me.

I firmly believe we should never define people by the difficult circumstances in which they find themselves. Instead, we should recognize their potential and help provide the tools they need to succeed.

A temporary setback should never have to become a permanent way of life.

An Evening of Elegance, Generosity, and Purpose

On Friday, November 6, 2026, Gateway180 will host its annual Open Your Heart for the Homeless Gala, appropriately themed "Home Is the Goal!"

The celebration will take place at the Ultra Club at Energizer Park, bringing together compassionate St. Louisans who understand that philanthropy is about more than writing a check. It is about investing in people and strengthening our community.

My dear friend and frequent plus-one, Mary Wimbley, and I are eagerly looking forward to attending.

Mary and I are both sold on this organization and its extraordinary mission. In fact, we intend to be lifelong supporters, and we sincerely hope many of our Sophisticated Living readers will join us in making that same commitment.

The evening promises an engaging combination of cocktails, dinner, silent and live auctions, and meaningful opportunities to learn more about Gateway180's work.

One of the evening's most anticipated moments will be hearing from a guest speaker whose family successfully transitioned from Gateway180's shelter into a permanent, stable home.

Now, that's the kind of success story I love to hear!

The gala will also highlight other families whose lives have been transformed through Gateway180's services.

Serving as Honorary Event Host is Amber Simpson, PhD, Gateway180's Board Chair and CEO and Principal Consultant at Veralign Consulting Collective.

Every ticket purchased and every sponsorship secured will help Gateway180 continue its work of empowering families to become independent and permanently housed.

Can't Attend? You Can Still Change a Life!

We all know that autumn in St. Louis is a particularly busy season for charitable galas, fundraisers, and community celebrations. Our social calendars fill quickly, and attending every worthy event simply isn't possible.

But here's my personal appeal to our readers:

PLEASE DON'T LET A SCHEDULING CONFLICT PREVENT YOU FROM SUPPORTING GATEWAY180!

If you cannot attend the November 6 gala, I strongly encourage you to make an online contribution.

Whether your gift is $50, $100, $500, $1,000, or more, your generosity can help provide shelter and essential services for families working toward a brighter future.

And financial contributions aren't the only way to make a difference.

You can support Gateway180 through financial contributions or physical item donations.

Financial Donations

  • Online & General Information at Gateway180.org Visit the official Gateway180 website to make a one-time or recurring financial gift

    • Donate: Support family housing initiatives through their website.

    • Volunteer: Offer your time or talents by signing up on their platform.

    • Partner: Connect with the organization for community or corporate partnerships.

VOLUNTEERS ARE IMPORTANT, TOO!

Consider contacting Gateway180 to learn how you can contribute your time and talents. Giving back through service can be every bit as rewarding as making a financial donation.

I have always believed that the true measure of a community isn't simply the magnificence of its homes, the success of its businesses, or the elegance of its social gatherings.

It is also how we treat those among us who need our help the most.

Kathy Connors puts it beautifully:

"When we help a family find a safe and permanent home, we are helping create a stronger future for that entire family and for our community."

I couldn't agree more.

Mary and I Hope You'll Join Us!

Having seen Gateway180's work firsthand, I can tell you that this is an organization whose mission deserves our attention, compassion, and lasting support.

Mary and I look forward to celebrating with fellow supporters on November 6, and we hope to see many familiar faces from the Sophisticated Living St. Louis community.

But more importantly, we hope you'll embrace Gateway180 as an organization worthy of your continued generosity long after the gala concludes.

Because every family deserves a safe place to call home. Every child deserves stability. And every person deserves the opportunity to become the very best version of themselves.

Let's help Gateway180 make that possible.
