For more than 170 years, Levi's® has defined the language of American style. From miners and movie stars to musicians and modern tastemakers, the brand's denim has become one of fashion's most recognizable cultural symbols. This July, however, the legendary label took an unprecedented step, making its debut during Paris Haute Couture Week through a striking collaboration with French designer Christelle Kocher.
The Christelle Kocher for Levi's® capsule marks a compelling intersection of two seemingly disparate worlds: the rugged authenticity of American denim and the meticulous artistry of French haute couture. The 10-look collection demonstrates that the world's most democratic fabric can also become one of its most luxurious.
Designer Christelle Kocher
Kocher, celebrated for her signature Couture-à-Porter philosophy and her role as Artistic Director of Maison Lemarié—one of France's storied couture ateliers—approached the project not as a reinvention of denim, but as an exploration of its untapped potential. Working alongside Levi's® designers and textile innovators, she transformed familiar icons, including the legendary 501® jeans and the classic Type II Jacket, into couture-worthy statements through extraordinary handcraftsmanship.
The collection is a masterclass in textile manipulation. Featherwork, hand embroidery, sculptural draping, intricate plissé techniques, floral fabric constructions, leather embroidery, lace applications, and resin-coated denim combine to create garments that blur the line between ready-to-wear and wearable art. Rather than concealing denim's inherent character, these techniques celebrate its texture while revealing new dimensions of softness, movement, and refinement.
Among the collection's standout pieces are dramatic black denim gowns that flow with unexpected elegance, sculptural feather capes that create ethereal movement, and layered plissé bustiers resembling abstract floral arrangements. One particularly arresting ensemble—a full feather gown paired with a coordinating cape—combines denim, lace, resin, and featherwork into shimmering surfaces reminiscent of fish scales, illustrating just how far the humble textile can be pushed without losing its identity.
Accessories continue the narrative, with the Levi's® Baby Brooklyn Bag reimagined as a couture accessory and dramatic feather headpieces adding theatricality to the collection's silhouettes. Together, they reinforce Kocher's vision that craftsmanship extends beyond garments to every element of a complete look.
For Kocher, the collaboration is deeply personal. "It was a privilege to bring these two teams together and see this collection come to life," she says. "This capsule reflects my life between the United States and France, two countries that fuel my creative energy."That transatlantic dialogue lies at the heart of the project. American denim serves as the foundation, while generations of French artisanal expertise elevate the material through painstaking handwork. The result is neither American sportswear nor traditional couture, but an entirely new conversation between the two.
Levi's® sees the partnership as a milestone in the brand's ongoing evolution. "Bringing Levi's to Paris Haute Couture for the first time is a major moment for us," says Mathilde Vaucheret, Vice President of Europe Marketing & Brand Experience. "With over a century of history behind the brand, partnering with Christelle Kocher felt like a natural fit. She brings a distinctly Parisian perspective with a modern edge that complements our denim heritage. Her Couture-à-Porter vision is the perfect way to elevate the craftsmanship of denim."
Presented during Haute Couture Week, the capsule represents far more than a fashion collaboration. It challenges long-held assumptions about denim's place within luxury fashion, proving that craftsmanship—not material alone—defines couture. The collection also signals Levi's® expanding role beyond everyday apparel, positioning the brand within the worlds of performance, red carpet dressing, and cultural expression.
At a moment when luxury increasingly values authenticity alongside artistry, Christelle Kocher and Levi's® have created a collection that honors both. By allowing American denim to speak fluently in the language of Parisian couture, they demonstrate that innovation often comes not from abandoning tradition, but from viewing it through an entirely new lens.
