What is Microblading?

A new cosmetic phenomenon, microblading combines self care with looking your absolute best. Want to learn more? SL met with Kristi of Boss Brows LA in Clayton to get the scoop:

A little about Kristi:

My name is Kristi and I was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California. I started my business out of my house in Los Angeles. I had a spare room that I turned into a microblading studio and began practicing as much as I can, seeing new clients and building a brand. Boss Brows LA started small but has been growing every year since 2016. I love my microblading clients and students and I equally love the daily grind of owning my own business.

What is microblading?

Microblading is the NEW solution to perfect eyebrows that won't wash off with the rest of your makeup. Microblading is a manual technique performed by an artist who implants medical grade pigment ink into the top layers of the skin using a hand tool with a varying number of needles to scratch the hair stroke design into the skin. This technique is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo that fill, shapes and defines sparse eyebrows.

What makes you passionate about it?

I first fell in love with microblading about 6 years ago. I was working at a high-end wax boutique in Beverly Hills and while I was waiting for a client to arrive, I stumbled across this article about microblading. At the time I was only familiar with permanent makeup but always considered the craft to be outdated and quite un-natural looking. When I came across this article and read how microblading replicated real hair and was applied into the skin with a manual tool, I couldn’t believe my eyes!

For people with fine, sparse eyebrow hairs- it was the perfect solution! I immediately got the procedure done and fell in love. I think what makes me passionate about this craft is not just being able to transform my client’s eyebrows but the smile I see when they look at them for the first time. I have clients of all different types. Men and women, both young and mature. People who have suffered from alopecia, Trichotillomania and cancer never imagined having a life where they didn’t have to fill their eyebrows in. It may seem like a small thing but making someone feel beautiful again because they are no longer insecure about their looks is the best feeling ever.

What training did you have to perfect your skill?

Like I mentioned above, I immediately became infatuated with this art and therefore didn’t do a lot of research when choosing the microblading training. I was determined to learn this new art even if I was forced to teach myself. I spent hours watching YouTube videos, which there weren’t a whole lot at the time, practicing on fake skin and trying to duplicate stroke patterns I saw on other microblading artist’s Instagram. Since then, I have been certified 4x in microblading, advanced microblading, combo brows and received my tattoo license. Now I teach microblading to students both in person and online and have created tons of free YouTube videos for struggling artists who need that extra help.
