Remembering Royalty

by Courtney Scott

As I watched The Queen’s funeral procession reach a somber climax at Wellington Arch, I was reminded of my own experience with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip that happened at the exact same location. I was living in London at the time and enjoying a long walk by myself on a rare beautiful early fall day. As I reached Wellington Arch, a motorcade came rushing towards me and I backed up to the interior of the arch for it to pass. The Queen and Prince Philip both turned to look in my direction from the backseat and waved in unison with smiles. Prince Philip’s wave looked more like a salute, perhaps to the arch and not to me. Nonetheless, as a longtime royal fanatic, it was a moment that I will never forget.

What really struck me was their sense of duty, looking out the car window ready to wave or salute, doing their public service duty even on a personal car ride through the city. A lot has been said about how we will remember Queen Elizabeth II, and I think it will be through her children and grandchildren that we will see her legacy live on.
