Houska is the "Master of Play" of the Pop Art World in Year-Long Exhibit at World Chess Hall of Fame

Saint Louis’s Central West End came alive on May 1 as art and chess lovers alike gathered to celebrate the vibrant opening of Charles Houska: Master of Play at the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF). The event marked the launch of a joyful, immersive retrospective honoring beloved local pop artist Charles “Charlie” Houska—and it did not disappoint.

Guests were treated to an evening of color, creativity, and community as they explored more than 75 works spanning Houska’s 30+ year career. New chess-themed commissions, including a playful 3D-printed set and glow-in-the-dark pieces in a blacklight gallery, delighted visitors of all ages. Outside, custom vinyl installations extended the artist’s whimsical style beyond the museum’s walls.

The celebration included face painting, poster-sized coloring stations, live chess play with a grandmaster, and fishbowl cocktails from Brennan’s—making it a true fusion of fine art and fun. As WCHOF Chief Curator Shannon Bailey put it, “Charlie turned the gallery into a ‘Fun House-ka.’”

Master of Play is on view through April 5, 2026, and admission is always free. For more information, visit worldchesshof.org.
