In the spirit of Homecoming season this fall, we asked teenagers from five different high schools if they would like to have their hair and makeup done at Dominic Michael Salon for a trial run. The girls were giddy when they showed up at the Ladue location, ready to see what they would look like after a consultation and then time in the styling chairs.

“For occasion hair for high school girls they typically have lots of ideas because they peruse the internet and see plenty of selfies and they know how they will look with different types of effects,” says owner Dominic Bertani.

For the ones who tend to be a bit on the quiet side about what they want, Dominic says the standard consultation each stylist does before starting a new look is essential. “We ask the same questions: Do you want your hair up or down? Would you like it smooth or would you like it curly? Just to get a rough idea and some parameters,” he adds.

The girls came in with dry hair; they didn’t begin with a blowout in the salon. “We recommend that they come in with freshly dried shampooed hair,” says Dominic. “Because most of these girls have long hair, it shortens their visit by about 30 minutes. Typically on a special occasion day they’re looking to get their hair done and move on with other parts of their day and other prep.”

Some of the styles were embellished with dry shampoos, giving the hair a little texture and body, which helps the style hold up better. Dominic says long, loose hair is the most requested look for many teenagers right now. He says braids are also popular because “they are a great way to secure that the hair stays positioned throughout an evening of dancing.”

Olivia, a freshman at Villa Duchesne, chose a simple blown out look, a sophisticated style accentuating her beautiful, long hair which Dominic says is most popular right now.

Caroline, a junior at Ladue, was styled with beachy waves– a result of a hot iron treatment. Each side was loosely pulled back for a more secured finishing touch.

Emily, a sophomore at John Burroughs School, had her naturally curly hair smoothed out into a silky texture, and then braided into a glamourous half up-do.

Catherine, a senior at MICDS, was uncomfortable with her first style that featured tighter braids pulled into a ponytail. She asked rather for tresses on the sides that stylist Kamiah Mills pulled forward from an elegantly revised chignon.

Francesca, a freshman at Nerinx Hall, was comfortable in loose waves that showed off her long hair and naturally stunning ombré color.
